Choice Waste Management Ltd was founded in 1997 by Raja Rizwan Iqbal following a successful career in the Merchant Navy, a career which laid foundation to the impressive record of this enterprise. From sharing premises with his father-in-law, a tyre repair garage in Slough, and a first year trading of only £7,000, Raj has grown the business to a turnover of £5m (2005/06). |

It was during Raj’s naval career that he became aware, through his relations in Pakistan that there was a growing interest in recycling and re-processing plastic, a process yet to be developed in the UK. This was furthered by Raj’s final appointment in the navy when he was based in Hong Kong – this, of course, led to the openings in the Far East. However having established the demand for waste products for recycling it was now necessary to secure sources of plastic waste in the UK. Reluctantly some companies started to take interest but only because Raj was able to make payment in advance of shipping – so great was his confidence. The confidence was founded and now under the hands-on control by Raj the company continues to flourish. Through the company, Raj works closely with DEFRA’s Advisory Committee on Packaging (ACP). He is a member of the ACP Plastic Task Force representing UK plastic exporters and the ACP Export Task Force responsible for UK plastic packaging waste. The company has sponsored an ACP project – the UK Packaging Waste On-Line Data System. |
